The
maquis: a user's guide
|
|
The walks, trails and circuits
described in this site have been carefully selected and tested.
However, in spite of our best efforts to remain up to date and
precise, you may encounter difficulties or differences that
we have not been able to foresee. Remember that the maquis
is a living thing, and as such, it grows, changes and sometimes
renders unrecognizable a trail that was clear only months before.
Although the maquis appears inviting, thanks to its various
colors and scents, it can also appear as a hostile and impenetrable
mass of bush to lost walkers!
|
| A
few words of advice ... |
|
|
Always leave
early in the morning or else late afternoon (although
if you leave late afternoon, ensure you have enough time
to complete the circuit): the quality of light is at
its best and the sun is not as strong - this is especially
important in Summer.
|
|
|
Remember
to take food and water: at least one liter of water
per adult.
|
|
|
Never light
a fire and avoid smoking in the maquis. Drought can
be severe, particularly in Summer, and the risk of bush
fire is very high.
|
|
|
If you leave
the flagged trails, remember to leave markers as you
go (make marks in the ground, place branches in view,
etc.) in order to easily find your way back to the trail
and thus to your starting point.
|
|
|
If you get lost, try
to climb to the highest point (rock, promontory,
etc…) in order to locate your trail. Try to find your
way to a shelter or house, even if it is in ruins, as
a path leading to it might help you to find your way back
to civilization.
And remember, always tell
someone where you are going and when you expect to
be back.
