From the beach to the hamlets

3 hours

From the parking lot of the Macchia e Mare hotel located on the D80 just before the village turnoff when heading north (orange flag trail).

A glorious walk that encompasses both hill and plain, and which leads up to the mountain which blocks the horizon to the west; to enjoy the best light and conditions, plan to walk either in the morning or late afternoon. The trail is flagged in orange and leaves from the Marina, just next to the Macchia e Mare hotel. Wear good walking shoes as the trail is quite rough and is used by few cars and a number of horses. The trail leads into the maquis, with Castellare and its castle in ruins behind you. Continue on into fields, looping through pastures, and then regaining the old mule trail which served as the villlage-beach road before the current road was built.

Enjoy the diverse and changing countryside: the traces of the ever-present flocks of sheep and the few houses which have survived despite years of bushfires. In the olive field, sit down and lean back against one of the ancient olive trees and survey the maquis which covers the last third of the walk, along with cork oaks and chestnut trees. This is an excellent walk for getting to know the valley. When you reach the Genoese bridge in Ponticellu, you can follow the road (five minutes walk away) back to the starting point. Simply cross over the bridge and follow the path which leads to the first few houses in the hamlet. The road (D232) is straight ahead and provides an easy way back (about 45 minutes).
