Cross a bridge when you come to it ...

And you'll see yet another side of the valley and its elegant but rustic charms. There are three bridges of note, all reputedly Genoese (built between 1289 and 1730).

Up on top of the valley, near Selmacce, is the Guadubughju bridge (pronounced "Oualaoudiou"), literally "the dark stream". The bridge spans the river near a swimming spot - probably the only place in the river where a tall man will briefly lose his footing. The combination of bridge and pozzu (hole in the river) results in a beautiful and popular village meeting place.

  Bridge and fountain walk

The Ponticellu or "little bridge" is located at the top of the hamlet of the same name. With its audacious curve, the stone arch links the two rivers as one. An architectural success, this bridge also offers a vaulted fountain, thus forming an harmonious couple. The bridge is the starting point for a number of bush walks. The old road - strada vechja - which leads to the plane, begins here.

The Vercetu bridge is located on the plane. Built from stones that have been rolled smooth, it is the most solid in appearance of the three bridges. It looks out over pastures which, come Spring, are invaded by asphodel.
