On April 1,1878, when
the public, co-educational primary school opened in Lapedina
suprana (upper Lapedina), only 39 of the village's
63 school age children were enrolled, as school was not
obligatory.
There was only
one class, divided into three levels (infants, junior
and middle classes) which prepared the children for further
studies. School enrollment has become a direct indication
of village demographics: 36 children in 1879, 26 in 1889,
17 in 1899, 21 in 1913 and 10 in 1925, when the school
was closed.
School presence was
sometimes also dependent on whether children were required
to work in their parent's fields. The
following inscriptions in the book of absences are prime
examples: in October 1922, three students were absent
to collect chestnuts; in
January 1923, three more students were absent to pick
olives. Poverty was also a motivation: in March 1923,
one child was absent because he did not have shoes.

In 1925, the residents
of Lapedinacci blackballed the school, in order
to prevent its closure. During one year, children were
not sent to school; to no avail: the school was relocated
to Pinu, a more central location, and then, in
1939, to the current school group located in the town
hall. In September 2001, the one remaining mixed-age class
registered only 14 students.
