Pietracorbara 2004: green valleys and blue tourism.

Pietracorbara in the year 2004? With its 497 permanent residents, the village is no longer in the red regarding demographics. However the population of the plain is, as always, greater than that of the village itself, whose population level is stagnating. Some services are still missing: the sewerage system is not totally functional in the plain, and the water issue is not completely solved. However, the electricity and telephone networks are now stable (ADSL in the village). The future of the school is no longer uncertain with its 27 students (September 2004). But other points remain unclear: environmental defense could be improved: wood cutting must be implemented more effectively and more carefully, the rural habitat should be restored and maintained more efficiently, and the coastline better defended against ill-conceived concrete constructions and their partisans. The future of Pietracorbara lies in finding the correct balance between its role as dormitory town and a valley suburb of Bastia, and of course its tourist functions which, while necessary, must be carefully defined and managed. Right now, tourist development is mainly "blue", that is, related to the beach, the sea and nautical activities. One way of broadening tourism while benefiting the valley would be to add a little green to the blue, by offering other activities, thereby proffering another view of the valley. Such development, while helping Pietracorbara to grow in terms of tourism, would also allow visitors better access to a land overflowing with history and to its residents.
